Once quarried, slate sheets are split into slabs and layers of different thicknesses and sizes. The only tool needed for this is the simple chisel, this works with faults in the slate opening it up along natural split lines. Compact back slate slabs are created from high-quality black slate and worked by dedicated craftsmen.
